Teaching Style

Ever wondered what Vinyasa actually means? Ever looked at a class schedule and wondered what style of Yoga you’re actually participating in? Or perhaps you’re new to all of this and didn’t even know that there were different styles of Yoga? Well, there are, and the style that Mia predominantly teaches, is Vinyasa Flow.

Vinyasa Description

Vinyasa is a Sanskrit word that is formed by linking two words together:

Nyasa means, ‘to place’ and Vi means ‘in a special or sacred way’. Hence, Vinyasa means ‘to place something in a sacred and special way.’

Flowing through a vinyasa yoga class requires us to have mindfulness between one moment and the next.  Vinyasa shows us that all forms are impermanent, cannot possibly be held onto, and that all movements have a clear beginning, middle and an end.  With this idea, we can release our attachment towards their outcomes, knowing that the dissolution of each posture, gives rise to other related forms.

You’ll often hear a teacher using the ubiquitous - ‘take a vinyasa’ - cue. In my class, I urge you to take a moment to appreciate what that really means. To truly appreciate the flow and transition from upward dog, back into downward dog.  These movements are symbolic for the many peaks and troughs of life, and our challenge as yogis is to ride this blissful wave with as much strength and grace as we can.

With a strong focus on alignment and modifications, my classes are generally suitable for all student levels. After all, this is what yoga is all about. The sense of union, or non-separation with ourselves, with each other, and with all that is around us.

Mia unfolded a world within me that was dormant for decades. She has this magical energy you instantly feel when she walks into a room.
